Bronx man who tried to break up fight sought for shooting, killing both of them

This article from New York Daily news is reporting how a 37 year old man, Luis Chacon, was witnessed trying to break up a fight between to civilians moments, both parents, before he started shooting and killing them both before running away. His current location is still unidentified.

This article begins with a blown up picture of the man of colour, this could be an implication based on his ethnicity/race, which arguable the news site could be dictating negatively.

Furthermore, the reasoning behind this shooting has not been mentioned. The possibility of him having a mental disorder has not been considered. Although I 100% agree what he does is unforgivable and awful, I think the news should have given speculation regarding the murderers reasoning.

"Scarlett Moffatt wins I’m A Celebrity 2016 after beating Joel Dommett and Adam Thomas in tense final"

This article, published on The Mirror, focuses predominantly on what could follow from the reality stars success on the ITV programme 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here'. This article emphasises the point that Googlebox personality Scarlett Moffatt is potentially on her way to making her first million. I think this itself expresses how the television industry is all about money.
Furthermore, the article also reads that Scarlett's agent (who I was personally unaware she had), is being careful when considering options for Scarlett who is receiving 'interest from both ITV and Channel 4'.
External sources (The Sun) have reported that the Moffatt family are due to leave Gogglebox following Scarlett's upcoming fame. This may lead to controversy and anger from Gogglebox fans, as the family are one of the most known and possibly entertaining characters to star on it. This also may be viewed as Scarlett betraying what enabled her to get onto I'm A Celeb in the first place. Many Twitter users (@ChloeLemon1, @MCJPeel and more) have argued that Scarlett is not 'even a real celebrity'.

I think Scarlett winning is a positive representation of females as she was up against two males, who are arguably more famous than her, and beat them. It is also a representation of regional identity as it is constantly mentioned that Scarlett is a Geordie.

Weekly News

When I read this article on SKY News, I was immediatly interested because although sexism in sport is hugely recognised, I never see it argued or made a big deal out of.
This article reports how Eva Carneiro, former first team doctor of Chelsea FC, left working with the team after having to TACKLE (HAHAHAHA) discrimination from the clubs manager and other members of the team, of what she believes to be based on her gender.

The sports medicine specialist stated "It is widely accepted that football has a discrimination problem. I really do feel that way, but I think it is the least challenged form of discrimination"
As previously stated, I definitely agree with Eva.

Female football players get much less publicity than male footballers and despite her not participating in playing the sport, Eva's story has not recieved a huge level of publicity either. This could possibly be because media (newspapers, news channels) do not want to have to publish articles that could possibly cause controversy against them from a football fan base, as football is a worldwide loved sport and therefore potentially jeopardise their audience, espeicially since Chealsea FC is a professional, premier league team.

AMY

Amy is a documentary film storytelling the life of Amy Winehouse and her life journey. The director, Asif Kapadia, used archived, founded footage of the star and arranged them in order to construct the narrative of the film.
In addition to using dug up video footage, Asif also managed to get hold of some old voicemail messages.
Amy's story is told by her close friends, family and people who had been aquatinted with her. This makes it much more personal feeling and increases the realism of the film. 'Amy' is an exploitation of Amy Winehouse's life which many people most likely did not know the real story to.

Regional Identity - during the film we constantly hear Amy speak about London. This implies she was proud of where she was from and always was remembering her roots.

Gender - Amy frequently was referred to as vulnerable in relation to her drug abuse. She is also expressed to as weak as she was choosing not to stop. She wanted to do the drugs in order to 'keep up' with Blake. This is a negative representation of women as it insinuates that women do anything to keep males happy.

Religion - On numerous occasions, Amy mentioned that she was Jewish. This could imply that she is proud of her religion.

Issues - The film is focused around drugs and reflects the lifestyle of a heavy drug abuser. This could be an urgin for people considering drugs not to do it and represents how dangerous substances are.

"Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to win ATP World Tour Finals title and seal world number one spot"

This article, from BBC sport, is covering the success of Andy Murray, tennis player, as he beat his opponent in a final game and became world number 2.

The article presents that Andy Murray is staying humble as he said "It's something I never expected". This can be seen as admirable because with success or fame, a lot of people seem to act superior. However, this world class sportsman has stayed true to himself and his supporters.

This article is a strong representation of regional and national identity. Andy Murray is Scottish, however, it is constantly being argued that "Andy Murray is only British when he wins". Implying that when he loses, England Ireland and Wales tend to remind the rest of the world that the tennis player is Scottish and not so related to them. ( https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/34909845?client=safari ).

However, as he has now won the world champion title, Andy Murray has made Scotland and Britain extremely proud and therefore England Ireland and Wales will want to claim him and express correlations between themselves and him.

Production Proposal

CHOSEN CONTENT: Representation
PRODUCTION FORMAT: Audio Visual
STATEMENT: "Exploring the representation of young black boys in British programmes with specific reference to Top Boy and Youngers"

I anticipate to make a trailer for a new, urban realism British programme focusing on the life of young 17 year old black boy growing up in the "hood". I aim to subvert my research investigation findings by defeating the stereotypes British black boys face in todays society. i want to still highlight the main stereotypes and conventions seen in many British programmes but overall oppose the typical views on black boys.

I aim for my trailer to be approximately 2 minutes in length.

Scheduling

TV scheduling is the division of specific programmes being broadcasted at certain times. The programmes are allocated to these slots based on many things including the target audience, genre, explicitness and more.

Broadcasters will mainly base when they broadcast shows based on the audience. There are certain times of the day when the producers target audience will not have access to a television or be busy (at school or work), so therefore they will allocate the programme to a time when the target audience will be watching television. An example of this could be soaps, which tend to be watched by working class adults who may use the soaps to escape their reality or perhaps relate to the characters and storylines they see on screen (uses and gratification). Since the working class are likely to be at work throughout the day, soaps air at a later time (7pm – 9pm) when the work day is over.

Zoning is when a channel will show two programmes of the same genre one after another. They will schedule them like this in order to keep a larger audience on their channel. The audience will tend to be fans of the genre so therefore stick on the channel to watch the next programme.

Inheritance is when a broadcaster airs a new or less popular programme on after a highly viewed one with hopes that the audience will continue to be fixated on the TV. This is in hopes to get the newer or less popular show, popular.

Pre echoing opposes inheritance by airing a less popular programme before a popular one with hopes that viewers will watch it during their wait to see the programme they are tuned in for.

Anticipation building is when teasers or spoilers of programmes scheduled to be aired later on in the day are shown. This is in order to attract potential viewers and increase rate numbers.

Hammocking is when a less popular programme airs in the slot between two popular programmes. Similarly to inheritance and pre echoing, the hopes of this is that the viewers stay on the channel and watch the show after watching what they anticipated to and whilst waiting for the next programme.

"Clinton campaign team joins in on mannequin challenge"

This article is reporting Hillary Clinton, former first lady and 2016 U.S Democratic president runner, participating in the trending mannequin challenge. This was a strategy thought of by her team in order to appeal to an audience by using social trends. Furthermore, this would trigger a response from the uses and gratification theory of people speaking to eachother about this, which will lead to Hillary's campaign being further spoken about.

Social network users have argued that Mrs. Clinton will go to deperate measures in order to attract and audience and many have stated that she tries too hard to act younger and win over youths by trying to relate to them.

Weekly News ep.10

This article, that has been reported on Sky News, explains how Janet Jackson abandoned the second leg of her tour due to 'doctors orders to rest up' due to her pregnancy.

I think that this article is a good representation of age because stereotypically, a public would frown upon the age of the new pregnant woman. However, not once in this article is there an implication of her age being a concern.

However, on USAToday news, they do actually question if it is safe to fall pregnant 'so late'. This article states that it is risky to have children after 35 years old due to higher risks of chronic medical conditions and also reads that "even if a mom seems to be completely healthy at age 50, she is still at higher risk for developing very serious conditions such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes"

I think that this could possibly put woman off of having children when they are slightly older which is upsetting due to the possibility that they may not find someone they want to start a family with until they are older. However, I do understand that there are increased health risks.

Weekly News ep.9

"Kim Kardashian is reunited with Kanye following £8.5m jewellery robbery by gang who bound and gagged her and put a gun to her head"

I saw this article on MailOnline. Of course I immediately had a sense of sympathy for the reality star/business woman who was reportedly held at gun point by 5 men in disguise as police officers whilst on a trip in Paris. However, I could not help but notice the lengthiness of the article in comparison to many other articles of similar content.

This, to me, is a strong representation of class in the news. When a woman of working class was raped and robbed, the MailOnline wrote a 20 line article about her and her tragedy. However, Kim Kardashian's incident has resulted in a phenomenal reaction from the same news website. I understand this may be due to the irony surrounding the fact that she is high class, rich and has a bodyguard, that prior to the attack tweeted "you don't become a bodygaurd overnight...it's a job with responsibility, dedication and passion", who just so happened to  not be with her the time she needed him most. Nonetheless, I cannot help but think the MailOnline may be discriminating against working class. They are strongly suggesting that an upper class "celebrity" being attacked is far more important than the basic working class woman, which is absurd.

Of course though, the MailOnline knew that Kim Kardashian's attack would provoke a large reaction and therefore invested more time into making a longer and better article in order to get more readers and hits.

Weekly news ep.8

"Gay, Muslim, Hispanic: meet Donald Trump's most unlikely supporters"

This article, posted by The telegraph, is about the upcoming U.S election and regards the controversy surrounding the idea that Donald trump is racist.
The article quotes Donald Trump arguing the accusation by saying "I have a great relationship with the blacks". Although Trump most likely thought that he was going to 'open peoples eyes' and perhaps change their mind of what they think he is like, it could be argued that he just made it even worse for himself. By saying "the blacks" he is categorising African Amercian's and other black ethnicities into one which could be offensive. Furthermore, he is speaking on behalf of a whole race.
Donald Trump also said "The Hispanics are going to get those jobs - and they're going to love Trump!" This, again, is Trump speaking on behalf of a ethnicity and also could be viewed as patronising. He is opposing a lot of things he has said in past speeches etc. which will not convince people to like him.
Lastly, the politician also said "I'm doing good for the Muslim's". This could again be viewed as patronising as he is insinuating that Muslim's are not treated fairly currently.

The title of the article may be misleading as it implies that the stated groups (homosexuals, Muslim's, Hispanic's) are supporting Trump, however the article shows that that is just what Donald assumes. This is further backed up when the article goes on to say "According to polls, however, these groups of voters are marked less enthusiastic about a Trump presidency."

Overall, this article is misleading and further adds to the ideology that Trump is racist and diversifies American citizens due to their sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and religion.

'Teen takes 'sexy' Snapchat selfies - and gets totally upstaged by her dad'

This article, posted by the Mirror Online, consists of a story of a young girl posting pictures of her with snap chat filters. Her dad then copied the pictures by drawing her tattoos on his body and posing the same way.
This went viral because his pictures are funny.

The title of this article could be shown downgrading to women as it uses the word 'sexy'. However, the girls images were not provocative etc.

Asides from representing gender, this article also shows the representation of age.
It shows the contrast of how the older generation perceive pictures to the younger generation and perhaps their ideally of 'sexy.'

I found this article amusing and not offensive. However, I could see why someone may be offended.

REGIONAL IDENTITY

I watched both the first episodes of Made in Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex and noticed a strong difference in their regional identity.

In Made in Chelsea, there seems to be some slight sense of competition to be the most classy, wealthy etc. The characters I saw were engaging in activity stereotypically viewed as for the rich. This would include Polo. Furthermore, the establishing shot at the beginning of the episode showed us where they live, which is the upper class side of London. This automatically shows us that they are rich. The music played throughout the episode is played by an orchestra. The males and females that are presented to us are wearing designer labels and the shops they shop in are all exclusive or expensive. This clearly shows their class as being high. Since we do not see them working and only enjoying luxuries, I can assume that they come from money and have wealthy families.

In The Only Way Is Essex, we are shown things that oppose Made in Chelsea. Firstly, the way they speak and the words their use are very contrasting. For example, in Made in Chelsea, they are very well spoken and do not use any slang or abbreviation. However, in TOWIE, the characters we see use words such as "Birds". This could portray a less classy setting. Further opposing Made in Chelsea, the music played in TOWIE is pop music you would hear on the radio, I heared them play Frisky by Tinie Tempa. The shots of Essex we see look much less classy than it does in Made In Chelsea. Rather than shown big designer shops, we are shown high street salons. Lastly, the clothes we see the characters of TOWIE wear are much less sophisticated than they are in Made in Chelsea. We see the men wear baggy jeans and hoodies and the women wear unlabelled tshirts and jeans with a lot of makeup. Both the males and females in TOWIE are evidently wearing alot of fake tan.

Overwll, although the cast of both Made in Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex are from the same country, the fact they are from different cities is clearly presented through their regional identity.

Another example of regional identity in a programme could be in Gossip Girl season 2 episode 11 when it is thanksgiving and the White American Families are all coming together to celebrate traditions of their country and the Polsih Maid, Derrota, is alone and wants to go and feed the ducks because something so small like that is what makes her thankful and happy. This shows regional identity because it shows how someone from a less privileged family who has had to come over to work for another family is very lonely and nowhere near as selfish or greedy as the upper class American, white family.

Image result for my brother the devil

My Brother The Devil

The 2012 film My Brother The Devil, directed by Sally El Hosaini, is an eye opening British film representing many different factors of today's society including religion, ethnicity, age, gender  and sexuality. I think this film is a strong and powerful film with unexpected plot twists, making it even more shocking.

The film starts by introducing the setting environment of the film, an estate. This automatically will give an audience who live or have lived in the environment a sense of relation as they will feel like the film could reflect their actual life. The film continues to show us the main characters, all of which are black, mix race and Egyptian teens/young adults. This suggests the film is targeted at that age. This already narrows down the target audience and implies that it is a film about the lives of young adults from different ethnicities growing up in the city/on an estate.

The colours in the opening switch from black and white to monotone colours. Not only does this make the opening more interesting, it also suggests the film is serious and not a comedy. The instrumental adds to this suggestion as it is not very upbeat as it is serious. The instrumental also sounds ambitious, possibly implying that the actors we are seeing have ambition to do something to help themselves or others.

This portrayal is further seen in the film when one of the protagonists, Rash, wants to get off the street and do something better with his life.

The plot of My Brother The Devil is that there are two young Arabs who are living in a Hackney estate. They are surrounded by bad influences and growing up around drugs, gangs and violence. One of the two Arabs is in a gang himself and is making money from dealing drugs, but wants his younger brother, Mo, to stay in school and do what he didn't do for himself. However, despite his warnings and forbidding of Mo going road and joining gangs, his younger brother lets his curiosity get the better of him and slowly starts to get wrapped up in that world.

The storyline is very relateable to young people living in Britain, especially London, as it does reflect the real lives of many young people. Most young people of this era know people like the characters in this film or actually are similar to the characters themselves. This could boost the emotion and relation the main audience may have for this film and therefore makes the film a larger success.

Religion, specifically Islam, is represented in this film as a big deal. The majority of characters are Muslim. However, although Islam is ultimately represented as a good faith which is very important in peoples lives, the film also does play on some stereotypes media often relates Islam to, such as terrorism.

Ethnicity is represented in this film significantly. The protagonists family is Egyptian. The parents are strict, especially the dad, and also expect big things from their children.

Age plays a large part in My Brother The Devil as most of the main characters are teenagers or young adults. This age is represented ultimately as trouble makers. Only one of the many young people in this film does not smoke, drink or get involved with gangs. This character wears a Hijab which also relates back to religion and represents Islam as being good. Furthermore, there is a scene when all the young people laugh at an old lady, this is a presentation of ageism and discrimination, further represented young people as horrible no goods.

While watching this film, I noticed that women are downgraded. This is shown in numerous occasions. One being how the mum of the protagonists seems frightened of her husband, possibly relating back to ethnicity. She is also shown as an unemployed stay at home wife and mother, which links back to the traditional views of women not being the provider of a family and just doing household chores. Another example when women are downgraded in this film is when there is one woman with a group of men and she tries to express her opinion and  give advice and she gets told "Shut up you tramp who pays the bills here". This further represents male dominance.

Lastly, sexuality plays a significant part in this film. Not only does it relate to the issue of homophobia but it also links to religion. One of the protagonists is secretly gay and tries to hide that from everyone, including himself by having a girlfriend. When he is found out, his brother downgrades him due to the fact homosexuality is seen as Haram and a sin is Islam. Furthermore, he gets called a "batty boy", a common term used to cuss or mock homosexual people, by other people his age around his area. This represents people in today's society as inconsiderate and it possibly portrays them as bullies. The issue of homosexuality is represented as a serious issue and shows the insecurities that homosexual people may have.

Overall, I think My Brother The Devil is an eye opening film which clearly identifies many different factors of the lives of all different types of people.

"Meet the women who marry rich, older men to pay for their extravagant lifestyle"

This article is about sugar daddies who fund younger girls extreme lifestyles, including tuition fees, 5 star holidays etc.

Young and beautiful university students have found a website to find a sugar daddy. One student, 19 year old Andrea Warren has found a man to pay for her £300 a week student rent. In return, she joins the older man in going on cinema dates, expensive holidays and even gym trips. This makes it a win win situation.
Another girl, Ali Mohammed, has revealed she has not one but TWO arrangements with other men. She claims they do not know about eachother which makes me question why she would reveal this on public news with her name and picture.

This article also lists the universities with the most sugar daddies in order

TOP 10 UNIVERSITY SUGAR BABIES

1. Kent - 724
2. Cambridge - 704
3. Nottingham - 671
4. Manchester - 562
5. St Andrews - 533
6. Westminster - 522
7. Bristol - 518
8. Glasgow Caledonian - 516
9. Leeds - 423
10. Exeter - 422

This article came as very shocking to me, especially after reading the list of the top universities with sugar babies. I thought these women wanted to be smart and independent. Furrhermore, I think this article portrays women as incapable of making it themselves, these sugar babies are not finding any of their own things, implying they cannot. This links to the traditional views of men being dominant and being the provider. Furthermore, this article makes me slightly upset to know the sugar daddies cannot find real love and have to buy a young and beautiful girlfriend who is just using them for their money.

"WOMAN HAS SPENT £10000 ON PRINCESS OUTFITS TO TRANSFORM HERSELF INTO DISNEY PRINCESSES"
My immediate thought when I read this was how does she even have that amount of money to waste like that, but each to their own.
The 25 year olds dream is to work as Ariel at Disneyworld. She is so obsessed with the Disney franchise that she even tries to rope her boyfriend, Derek, into it by pestering him to dress up as Prince Charming. Sarah spends up to £1500 on each personalised outfits which can take up to 6 months to make.
Sarah likes to dress up daily and entertain children who also love Disney.
I think that this article portrays women as the typical stereotype of being bimbos with no ambition. However, I think that Sarah is brave to show what she loves and share it with others.
